LIVER (AGE) SPOT TREATMENTS

Different ways to treat what some people call age spots, but what I call liver spots.  This is Dr. Steven Andrew Davis, Speaking of Health.  They are brown, flat pigmented patches, and more common as we age.  But don't call them "age spots"; I think "liver spots" is fine, though they are not linked to disease of the liver.

The men and women who have liver spots often feel stuck with them.  They can't be scrapped or creamed off.  But there are some ways to make them less obvious.  Perhaps the best, though the one most underrated, is the use of frequent sunscreens. these liver spots are typically common in sun exposed areas, like the backs of the hand and face.  These parts of the body are chronically exposed to ultraviolet light, whether in northern or southern climates and at all times of the year. Some people have found that simply by using sunscreens daily, year in and year out, the spots will fade significantly.

Some bleaching or fading agents also work to reduce these obvious patches.  The over-the-counter agents are not as potent as the prescription strengths, which must be used with some care or else even normal colored skin will lighten up.

Finally, some surgical techniques can help remove liver spots.  Deftly applied liquid nitrogen or strong chemicals can gently peels these spots off, so can some of today's sophisticated surgical lasers and pulse light devices.  For a copy of this script access our web site, speakingofhealth.com.  Speaking of Health, I'm Dr. Steven Andrew Davis for CBS News.
