ACNE -- FACE FACTS

Acne facts and fantasies and who cares?  This is Dr. Steven Andrew Davis, Speaking of Health.  Acne doesn't exactly lead the list of dangerous diseases, but it is one of our most common conditions.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology as many as four out of five teenagers have acne, one in five adults between the ages of 25 and 44 have acne, and nearly half of all adult women have mild to moderate acne.  "I'm 35, so why do I still have acne?"  This is a question commonly asked by women.  The answer then is "yes, you do, and about half of your friends do also."

Now, do you think acne is caused by eating chocolate, nuts, cola, pizza, potato chips or any other foods?  In a word, "no".  There are no predictable dietary causes of acne, though it is credible that some peoples acne worsens when they eat certain foods.  Does stress cause acne?  Indirectly, possibly; the mechanism is thought to be increased production of male-type hormones which in turn stimulate oil glands whose product, in turn is the fuel for acne's fire.

If this all sounds complicated for simple zits, well, it is.  Acne, an extremely common and sometimes horrendously troublesome condition, is multifactorial in origin; genetic, hormonal, occasional factors in life style thrown in.  For a copy of this script access our web site, speakingofhealth.com.  Speaking of Health, I'm Dr. Steven Andrew Davis, for CBS News.
