CHRONIC DISEASE?
DON’T GIVE UP!
You have a chronic
disease? Don’t give up. This is Dr. Steven Andrew Davis, Speaking of
Health. Chronic backache? Don’t
take it lying down. There are new
mechanical, injectable, electrical ways to treat it. And the same theme resounds for lot of other
chronic problems, known previously to be untreatable.
Rheumatoid
arthritis? I saw a patient who has
terribly deforming arthritis of the hands, which he has just learned to live
with because he doesn’t want to take steroids or immunosuppresive
drugs. This is a well-read man, but he
didn’t know that a new class of drugs, collectively called
“biologics” can be safer and more effective for arthritis than
older treatments. He needn’t give
up, but he does need to see his family doctor for guidance.
Migraine
headaches? A host of new treatments and
in new forms. Even some headaches which
you think are not migraines might get better with these treatments. And the same never-give-up attitude can apply
to those who have suffered with peptic ulcer disease, chronic knee pain, and
skin problems like psoriasis and fever blisters. This is “news” you ask? It is if you’re so resigned to your
fate that you’ve given up on your physical or emotional disorder. Take another look at your problem. You might find a doctor who can help you, not
just because he or she is a better doctor, but because they have something
better to use that you didn’t know about.
Speaking of health, I’m Dr. Steven Andrew Davis, for CBS News.
